Roblox Malware

According to a report by Kaspersky's SecureList, Roblox malware is responsible for 9.6% of all gaming-related cyberthreats. This is based on the number related malicious or unwelcome files. This platform is second only to FIFA and Minecraft, which are responsible for 25.2%, 11.7%, and respectively, of all such threats.

Kaspersky, a cybersecurity leader, uses AI-driven technology for protection against hackers and viruses. Kaspersky created the gaming-related cyberthreats reports to warn gamers about the latest cyberthreats. It also provides information about the most dangerous and widespread malware they might encounter.

The study examined threats and statistics related to cryptocurrency miner attacks, game cheating threats, and data thieves. Kaspersky created a list of the 28 most popular games that were or would soon be available on Origin and Steam, along with platform-independent tiles to determine the most serious threats. The list includes Roblox, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto and Need for Speed as well as Call of Duty, FIFA and CS:GO.

The security firm discovered that the top five PC games that were used as bait for cybersecurity threats from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022, included Roblox, Need for Speed and Grand Theft Auto. Call of Duty was also among them. The top mobile games were FIFA, Roblox and Grand Theft Auto.

The organisation reviewed 91.984 files that contained malware and potentially unwanted programs. These files were distributed to 384,224 users using the popular game titles as a lure. It ranked Roblox third in terms of malicious or unwanted files (8.903) and second based upon the number affected users (38.838), just behind Minecraft (131.005).

Kaspersky's analysis reveals that multiplayer gaming platforms could pose a greater threat than other games. He specifically points to Roblox and Minecraft as examples.

The report states that "Worryingly" the primary target audience of these games are children and teens, who lack experience in cybersecurity. "Because of this we assume that they could be easy prey for cybercriminals. This means we need to pay particular attention to cybersecurity hygiene training to kids.

The company also noted that malware and other unwanted software distributed as cheats were a significant threat, especially to players with a special interest in a popular series of games.

The report states that players often get malicious software on their devices, which steals sensitive data, when they try to download popular games from third-grade websites instead of purchasing them on the official site.

These are often "cracked" versions of popular games that people try to illegally download and then play for free, instead of paying retail price. People can also mistakenly download malicious games by clicking on misleading links to legitimate websites.

Kaspersky offers a number of suggestions to gamers to help them protect themselves against malware, hacking attacks, phishing, and other threats. To ensure authenticity, Kaspersky suggests enabling two-factor authentication for all accounts, using strong passwords and double-checking download URLs. Kaspersky recommends that you avoid cracked software and illegal content such as cheats.
